This Terrestrial Mercator World Globe with Compass is very skillfully made. It measures overall 5.75" inches in width and is 8.25" inches tall.
This Terrestrial Gerard Mercator Globe is made of 12 copperplate printed gores (specially shaped map sections) modeled after the actual 16th Century original cartographers globe. The gores are cut and applied by hand on papier-mache globe spheres. The globe is meticulously handcrafted using the complicated ‘gravure’ printing process that results in the sharpest details, lines and symbols.
The beautiful globe stand is made of wood and brass. The wood stand has an antiqued distressed honey French finish. The brass has a bronze finish. Inset into the base is a brass compass which is a reproduction of a 17th Century Dry Compass.
This terrestrial globe is an reproduction of the famous Dutch cartographer (map maker), Gerardus Mercator’s engraved charts. A reprint of the original copperplate gores made in cooperation with the Royal Library in Bruxelles. Gerardus Mercator created the first European Mercator Projection map in 1568, it became the standard map projection for nautical purposes because of its ability to represent lines of constant course, known as rhumb lines.
Nautical scenes are depicted on the outside of the Globe and include compass roses, elaborate cartouches and mythical sea monsters.
