Product Description
This contemporary classic reproduction Weber Costello 1921 world globe is very skillfully made. It measures overall 7.1" inches in width x 12.0" inches tall.
This Weber Costello 1921 Globe is made of copperplate printed gores (specially shaped map sections) modeled after the actual 16th Century orginal cartographers globe. The gores are cut and applied by hand on papier-mache globe spheres. The globe is meticulously handcrafted using the complicated ‘gravure’ printing process that results in the sharpest details, lines and symbols.
The globe stand is made of ebonized Mango wood with a bronze finished brass arm. The stand has a distressed honey French finish.
Weber Costello & Co. acquired the A. H. Andrews & Co. globe business in 1896. The firm became Weber Costello in 1909 based in Chicago. The firm boasted in 1922: “The manufacture of globes requires skilled, experienced workmen, and the most accurate machinery. We have for this work the largest and best appointed establishment in the world. We have had forty-one years’ experience in globe manufacture. There are no globes made anywhere, by anyone, that equal our product.”
They were a huge supplier of school globes and sold a large variety of globes from around 1907 to the early 1970s. The firm went to say that their globe maps were “made by the greatest map makers in the world, G. W. Bacon & Co., London, England, and W. & A. K. Johnston, Edinburg, Scotland.
This beautiful Weber Costello world globe is sure to become a conversational addition to your nautical desk top decor. The world in 1921. Roaring, yes...and still colonial.
