Details on this USS Worden CG-18 Guided Missile Cruiser ship model featuring intricate elements such as radar systems, missile launchers, deck guns, lifeboats, anchors and many more details...
This USS Worden CG-18 Leahy-Class Guided Missile Cruiser model was specially designed & built by the plank on bulkhead method (joining multiple small pieces of wood like western red cedar, rosewood and mahogany wood together on the hull). The model rests on a black solid wood base with a metal nameplate and brass support posts. The ship model is built exactly to scale as the original 1963 USS Worden CG-18 was with many details. The task required skillful craftsmen hundreds of hours to accomplish.
This is an Exclusive Edition Model Ship, where each model is uniquely identified by a serial number, which is laser cut to the back of the nameplate. In this edition, we are able to identify the production date of a model, the material that we used on the model, the craftsmen who worked on each area of the model, the individual who inspected the model and also the professional packaging staff, who finally packed the model into shipping box.
The USS Worden (CG-18), a Leahy-class guided missile cruiser, was commissioned on August 3, 1963. Named after Admiral John Lorimer Worden, she played a crucial role during the Cold War. The USS Worden was made in Maine by Bath Iron Works. It had modern missile systems and electronic warfare abilities. Throughout her service, the USS Worden was stationed primarily in the Pacific as part of the U.S. Seventh Fleet. She was actively involved in the Vietnam War, providing naval gunfire support, launching missiles, and conducting search and rescue missions. Her presence was critical in ensuring the safety of American and allied forces. The USS Worden CG 18 model ship took part in Operation Frequent Wind in 1975, helping evacuate Saigon. It also joined in joint exercises with other navies to improve international cooperation. In the 1980s, she received an upgrade called the New Threat Upgrade (NTU) program. This upgrade improved her radar, missile, and electronic warfare systems. The USS Worden was decommissioned on October 1, 1993, after serving for 30 years. Her legacy is honored through detailed models that capture her essence. Her contributions to national security and key historical events stand as a testament to the dedication and bravery of the United States Navy.
