Product Description
This high quality, expert level, Legendary Flying Dutchman Ghost Tall Ship model is fully assembled and ready for display (not a kit).
This Flying Dutchman Ghost Tall Ship model was specially designed & built by the plank on bulkhead method (joining multiple small pieces of western red cedar, rosewood, and mahogany wood together on the hull). Master craftsmen using historical photographs, drawings or original plans meticulously handcrafted this highly detailed wood model from scratch. The task required hundreds of hours to accomplish.
This legendary Flying Dutchman model is painted in dark black paint with features such as moss and tattered sails of a ship doomed to sail the seven seas forever. It features plank on frame, three decks, and two rows of ferocious metal cannons on each side of the ship. The front bowsprit and three large masts are connected securely using advanced rigging and lines painstakingly knotted and fastened by hand. The sails are made into tattered shapes to create a ghosted realistic look. The bowsprit details are made in the shape of teeth like the mouth of a sea monster, which adds to the ghost and uniqueness of the Flying Dutchman model ship. The pirate ship is mounted on a solid wood base with a metal nameplate.
The Flying Dutchman is a legendary ghost ship, allegedly never able to make port, but doomed to sail the seven seas forever. The myths and ghost stories are likely to have originated from the 17th-century Golden Age of the Dutch East India Company and of Dutch maritime power. The oldest known extant version of the legend dates from the late 18th century. According to the legend, if hailed by another ship, the crew of the Flying Dutchman might try to send messages to land, or to people long dead. Reported sightings in the 19th and 20th centuries claimed that the ship glowed with a ghostly light. In ocean lore, the sight of this phantom ship functions as a portent of doom. It was commonly believed that the Flying Dutchman was a seventeenth-century cargo vessel known as a fluyt. The Flying Dutchman has been captured in paintings, television series, and movies such as Pandora and the Flying Dutchman (1951), At World’s End, and Dead Man’s Chest (2006) from Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean films.
