Freedom 1980 America's Cup Half Hull Model 24"

This America's Cup half hull model was crafted in mahogany and tropical hard woods by the traditional plank on bulkhead method. After the bulkheads are laid and the hull lines trued, the hull is planked with individual wooden strips to form a smooth silhouette.
The Freedom 1980 model is then sanded and hand painted with gleaming blue topsides & bottom, three white cove stripes with "Freedom" framed on the after quarter. The half hull is then mounted on a ready to hang wooden plaque, with an engraved brass nameplate. The half hull model is built exactly to scale as the original Freedom 1980 was. The task required skillful craftsmen hundreds of hours to accomplish.
The 1980 America's Cup was held in September 1980 at Newport, Rhode Island. The US defender, Freedom, skippered by Dennis Conner, defeated the Australian challenger, Australia, skippered by James Hardy, four races to one. This was the last successful defence of the cup by the New York Yacht Club and the last defender designed by the naval architectural firm Sparkman & Stephens. It was the sixth unsuccessful challenge by Australia and the third by Alan Bond.
